Abstract

The modernization of the culinary industry has led Padang restaurants to adopt more contemporary visual design approaches. This study explores how modern Padang eateries creatively integrate traditional Minangkabau visual elements such as ‘gonjong’ roof motifs and ‘songket’ patterns within a modern aesthetic framework. Using a qualitative case study method, data were collected through visual observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that traditional cultural symbols are not only preserved but reinterpreted to appeal to younger generations and meet evolving market expectations. Modern materials and simplified motif forms are used strategically to create a distinctive yet contemporary brand identity. However, challenges remain regarding the potential loss of cultural depth when traditional elements are applied superficially. This study underscores the need for collaborative efforts among designers, business owners, and cultural experts to ensure authenticity in visual expression. It contributes to the discourse on cultural preservation through design and offers practical insights for culinary businesses seeking to maintain cultural roots while remaining visually competitive in a globalized market.
